bands
the dirty river dixie band The Dirty River Jazz Band is a traditional style jazz band hailing from San Antonio, Texas. The first band members originally met at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas where most of them studied music. After a concert put on by San Antonio’s own Jim Cullum, Chris Alvarado and Kris Vargas decided to put a similar group together. Their first public performance was under a gazebo on the square of downtown Seguin where they instantly started turning heads. They have gone on to perform at swing dance events, weddings, corporate events, private parties, and a number of venues around the United States.
The band is managed by Drummer, Vocalist, and Arranger Chris Alvarado, who also handles bookings. Other band members include Curtis Calderon (Trumpet) Evan Drumm (Trombone), Nick Brown (Clarinet), Trevin Roming (Piano/Arranger), Abel Alaniz/Ric Ramirez (Bass)! The Dirty River Jazz Band’s sound closely emulates The Jim Cullum Jazz Band who has helped mentor the members of the band. |

Gilbert CarrizalesGilbert Carrizales began his swing dance journey right here in San Antonio, Texas. In 2010 he joined a breakdancing club consisting of dancers skilled in multiple styles of street dancing. Shortly after, he enrolled in a college class titled 'Swing/Jazz with Carrie Vicana'. Initially, Gilbert dreaded joining the class as he felt it was a style of dance he would not enjoy however he decided to pursue the class anyway and to his surprise, he loved it. His instructor Carrie informed him of a weekly event at 'Sam's Burger Joint' called 'Monday Night Swing'. Throughout the next couple of years, Gilbert continued to immerse himself in the dance, attending his very first Alamo Stomp in 2014.
In 2016, he joined Alamo City Swing Revival, teaching his first beginner classes supervised by swing dance veterans Jay Rockwell & Robert Jones. In 2017, Gilbert stepped into the role of DJ as he felt he had finally immersed himself well enough to provide music for local events. In 2022, Gilbert became President of Alamo City Swing Revival where he now serves as an instructor, overseer, sound set up & Dj, and graphic/flyer designer. 12 years later, Gilbert will forever be grateful that he decided to take that Swing/Jazz class in college. |
